Introduction to the Work
Ethan Ryman’s work presents cumulative, cross-media processes in which he builds and photographs sculptural models, using the cropped and flattened images to make derivative photo-sculptural works. These resulting works reveal meticulously layered material elements, each stage of construction underpinned by subsequent architectonic considerations. The visual language of the work deceptively sways between degrees of abstraction, representation, and dimensionality. Drawing from an ongoing study of the intricately converging architectural planes which compose urban scapes, Ethan’s work aims to examine this sense of dimensionality and objecthood and provoke conversations about perceptions, assumptions, and evaluations conditioned by the human eye.
